Before I had a baby, I would never have imagined what a mess babies can make. Thomas’ clothes are constantly covered with food, drool, and dirt. Fortunately, this homemade laundry soap removes virtually all of the stains he manages to get on his clothes while being gentler on his skin—and on the environment. Borax and vinegar remove stains, soften the fabric, and kill many of the bacteria that lurk on his clothes.
Homemade Laundry Formula
Enough for 2-3 Months in a 1-Baby Home
- 8 tablespoons of liquid castile soap
- 1 cup of washing soda
- 4 cups of baking soda
- 1 cup of borax
- 1 cup of white vinegar
- *Optional—up to 8 drops of essential oil. The oil won’t scent your clothes, but it will add a pleasant touch to laundry day. If you choose to use an essential oil, mix it with the castile soap.
- Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl. Wait until the vinegar fizz has gone down and store in an air-tight container. Use 2 tablespoons per load of laundry.

My grandmother, AKA Granny Green, always made her soap but not like that. She made it over an open fire in a kettle stirring until hard.

Do you know if this laundry soap is OK in a front load washing machine that needs HE soap?
As far as I know, this laundry soap works fine in HE machines. I believe you’re supposed to use half as much. Because the mix doesn’t sud up, there’s less danger of a big problem. That being said, I have a really old machine. Best of luck!
